Hiring an unlicensed contractor can lead to unsafe, defective, or incomplete work that may cost even more to fix in the future.

The risks of unlicensed work

Unlicensed work is not only illegal in Queensland, but it also poses serious risks.

Contractors without the proper qualifications, experience, or financial stability may produce substandard work, leading to potential:

  • structural issues that compromise your home’s safety
  • additional costs for rectifying poor-quality work now and into the future
  • disputes that may turn into legal proceedings in some instances.

The benefits of hiring a licensed contractor

By choosing a licensed professional, you can ensure:

  • compliance with Queensland’s building regulations
  • access to the QBCC-administered Queensland Home Warranty Scheme, which protects against defective, incomplete, or subsidence-affected work undertaken on a residential property
  • work performed by a qualified professional with proven experience and credentials.

How to verify a contractor’s licence

Before hiring a tradesperson, check their licence status on the QBCC website:

  • Find a local contractor—use the QBCC’s free online search tool to find licensed contractors in your area including plumbers, builders, carpenters and certifiers. If you already have someone in mind to do the work, you can also check they are appropriately licensed to do the work by using our free licensee register.
  • Find an electrician—via the Electrical Safety Office.

Know your rights and protections

In Queensland, any building work valued over $3,300 must be completed by a licensed professional and be accompanied by a relevant contract. Additionally, electrical and plumbing work, regardless of cost, can only be legally carried out by licensed individuals.

By hiring a licensed contractor, you ensure quality repairs, compliance with legal requirements, and long-term protection for your home and investment.
